How to read the work penalty of a book or item
  1. Put the book (or item) alone in the left slot of the anvil.
  2. Change one letter of its name.
  3. Read the level cost shown below, then take the book back out without taking the result.
  4. Type that number in the "Rename cost" field: the site works out the penalty for you.

A rename costs 1 level plus the penalty. Freshly found or traded books cost 1.

About this tool

How do I avoid "Too Expensive!" on the anvil?

Every anvil use adds a work penalty, so the order you combine books in matters. This calculator tries every order and picks the one with the fewest levels where no step costs 40 levels or more.

Should I combine the books first or put them on the item one by one?

Usually combining books in pairs first is cheaper, because the penalty grows less. The calculator shows the exact order, step by step, with the cost of each step.

Can I merge two enchanted swords or two pieces of armor?

Yes. Add the second item next to your books and the calculator also considers merging the two items.

Where can I find a Mending book?

Mending never comes from the enchanting table. You can get it from librarian villagers, fishing, chests and trial chamber vaults; the Find books tab shows the chance of each one.
