How Minecraft experience works
Experience comes in points; the green bar fills as you collect them and every full bar is a level. Higher levels need more points each: levels 1 to 16 are quick, after 30 every level costs a lot more. That is why spending levels from 30 down is expensive and an enchanting table only takes 1 to 3 levels.
The formulas
- Points to reach a level up to 16: level² + 6 × level.
- From 17 to 31: 2.5 × level² − 40.5 × level + 360.
- From 32: 4.5 × level² − 162.5 × level + 2220.
Good to know
- When you die you drop 7 points per level, up to 100 points: almost everything above level 7 is lost.
- Mending repairs 2 durability for every experience point it absorbs, before the points reach your bar.
- A Bottle o' Enchanting gives 3 to 11 points (7 on average).
